especially since i forgot my password to the VPN, and just tunnel through the one externally accessible host to anything else i need. ;-)

You'd need one of the above protocols anyway. VPN by itself doesn't solve much, as it's just a virtuallization of cables.

(Note - I'm not a sysadmin, but I saw one on TV)
