The guard looked at her gun, said nothing and passed them in, then stopped the man behind them because he had beer and snacks in his bag. Park rules prohibit outside food. It's clear what the 'security' check was really about: improving park food vending revenues.

Heh heh, the fools. The gun's cartridge was loaded with small pretzels and Tootsie Rolls.

and all programs using the "exe" suffix.

so.... how did windows boot?

IIRC, the virus modified the registry entries which tell Windows how to handle .exe files. Booting up is fine. Once the system's up, every time explorer tries to launch an .exe, Windows wound up checking the registry for what it should do with the file. The registry modification removed the "magic" that told it that it's an executable.

I remember at work someone convincing me it was a good idea to copy the .exe registry class into another one, say, .myinitials, so if the .exe registry settings got clobbered I could always rename regedit.exe to regedit.myinitials and fix it.

Damnit, Dvorak
by Applekid (993327)

Great. I happen to agree that putting things in networked services just for the sake of having it in networked services is a waste of resources. But since Dvorak came right out and said it now I haven't got a argumentative leg to stand on. It's like a child molester agreeing with me that we ought to have more public parks.

Next thing you know he'll declare how much he likes pizza, completely undermining my fondness of it.

Every time we have an article on Slashdot about some backups-gone-bad horror story, someone always asks 'hey, how come we never hear about the times when things go right and the sysadmin saves the company?'Well, here you go. Somebody owes someone a beer.

You're assuming the sysadmin wasn't the one that started the fire! =)

The Age Old Battle
by Applekid (993327)

So does this mean that Pirates > Ninjas after all?

The battle rages on. This only shows that Eyeliner Pirates > Trenchcoat Ninjas, which I think we already knew.
